I discovered Glendalough a few ago, well not really discovered as I was taken there by friends. The drive to Glendalough is about one hour from Dublin. There are two main routes to get there, one by heading south out of Dublin towards Bray and just following the signs after you pass the Bray junction, the other much more interesting route is by Sally Gap. The Sally Gap route goes over the top of the Wicklow Hills and on a clear day is really quite beautiful.
Once at Glendalough there is a choice of two car parks, almost always I park in the furthest one, this one is nearest to the walking trails. The first car park is designed for those touring around the old monuments and the exhibition which is run telling the history of Glendalough and of St Kevin , one of the reasons why people come here to visit.
However the walking trails are my main reason mostly for heading down to Glendalough. There are five marked walking routes of varying lengths and hardship – though none of them are hard, and on a sunny weekend none of them are quiet either. More information is on the Walking in Ireland web site on their section about Glendalough Walks. I hope you enjoy this peaceful oasis in the mist of a busy Island as much as I do.
