Standing waiting to cross the road to get my weekly pizza I over heard a few remarks beside me. I was aware that I had stopped at the crossing besides a blind man, his cane was to my side and his free arm was trying to find the buttons for the crossing lights. He found them and I stood and watched, I had already pressed the button.
Normally I would just skip across the road when there was a break in the traffic, however I realised that he might have a problem and I was waiting for a change until the lights changed. Waiting for the lights to change for pedestrians in Dublin, Ireland, can take quite a while. And even after the lights have changed you take your own life in your hands if you cross to soon after the lights changing. Cars speed through the lights once they have turn red, to only stop 100 meters further down the road.
The blind guy turn to his right and ask three women standing beside him.
“Could you help me cross the road?”
“Go away!” the three replied in unison.
At first I was shocked and surprised, but then I realised they had just confirmed something about this country and something about a large minority of women in Ireland that I had expressed some time before. The driving of a car through a red light when pedestrians are crossing illustrates a complete disregard for other people, that you are more important them others. Fairly common in Dublin.
I have had the pleasure of living here for the last ten years and Dublin, Ireland has changed. The whole country has become much richer. During the same period the country has become less friendly. And I say this as one who still loves Dublin, and I try to bear in mind that this county has been very good to me.
But back to this large minority of Irish women. These are the ones who have the ability to drives me nuts. I am not going to even start on the idea of femininity, to much trouble there for me. But they have lost their humanity. To turn around to a blind guy and in unison to tell him to go away says so much about about you, and then to just carry on your conversation as if nothing had happened.
I go to bed each night and I am able to sleep. I don’t worry about what I have done, I live a good life full of mistakes and full of caring. Often I would like to be more important than others, to get where I want to go faster, to not have to stand in queues, but I am not
