Be Wary Of Some Debt Management Help

When we are in trouble it is too easy to accept advice. No more so than when you are in financial trouble. Secretly we hope for a quick fix, and something that will be easier than scrimping and saving. As soon as someone offers a solution we are often too quick to jump at an opportunity we usually know little about. A lot of people out there are quick to offer debt management help, but do they really have your financial wellbeing in mind?

The first trap to be aware of is anyone that is willing to charge you a fee for their debt management help. First of all they know the difficulty their clients are in, otherwise why would they be seeking the help with debt management from a ‘professional’? Yet they are happy to add to their already sky high pile of bills with one of their own. There are several not-for-profit organizations that are there to help people, free of charge with debt management, budgeting and financial planning advice.

The next trap is finance companies. They are often all too happy to take on your debt. We see advertisements for debt consolidation loans – guaranteed acceptance! Sure it sounds wonderful. Weekly repayments might be affordable so you think you’ve found the answer to your troubles. While not all finance companies are loan sharks, ensure you know what you are getting in to first. What is the interest rate they are charging you? What is the total amount of interest you will pay over the term of the loan? What application fees or annual fees are they charging you? Will you be penalized if you pay off the loan early? If you are not 100% confident with the contract you are signing, or even just for safety’s sake, get it checked by a professional who offers free budgeting advice. A second opinion may help you spot a potentially damaging clause in the contract.

Lastly consider the source of the advice you are being given. Is it coming from someone with personal experience? Is it coming from a ‘professional’ who earns big bucks and maybe commission? Is it coming from a random website you stumbled across one late night? Ask yourself if you were not in financial difficulty would you want to have any help or associate with this person or business? If the answer is no, then you definitely need to keep looking.
