Working in Ireland can be rewarding, however it can also be boring and dull – just like anywhere else. Most of the foreigners that come to Ireland end up in the boring and dull jobs.
Ireland for many years has been the back office for multi-national companies. They work in what has been compared to the modern work-houses, answering phones all day to irate customers, who have just wait ten or fifteen minutes to get an answer to their question.
One of the common jobs in this category is credit control. Credit controllers in these centres are low level call agents. They don’t have a choice who they call or when – they finish one call and their computer automatically dials another number – modern hell. If they walk away from their computer to use the toilet or have a break the computer and calling system automatically logs how long they are away from their desk.
Every movement of these employees are logged from the minute they start work until they finish at the end of a long boring day. The amount of calls they make, how long each call takes, if it is marked on their system as resolved or passed on or a call back is required. The amount of dropped calls are recorded – that is the amount of customers that call but don’t wait to speak to someone as the waiting for them is too long.
The employee is faced with all this data on their performance on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. It will be considered as part of their employment review. The whole atmosphere in these work-houses is generally unpleasant and staff turn-over is higher than the average.
This is modern Ireland – if you can deal with this for a few years or months you will be rewarded with the lowest level of pay possible, in general around the late teens or early twenties – welcome to modern Ireland.
